Overview

The Salkantay Trek 5 Days It’s like the second most popular trek around Cusco. People dig it. Why? Because you get to see all sorts of crazy landscapes. Think snow-covered mountains, seriously blue lakes like Humantay Lake and Salkantay Lake – they’re something else. Then you’re walking through cloud forests and proper Peruvian jungle. Bottom line, it’s a really beautiful trek, one of the top ones in Peru, for sure. Totally fascinating too.

Itinerary

DAY 1:

CUSCO – MOLLEPATA – SORAYPAMPA – HUMANTAY LAKE

Listen up, day one starts early. We’ll grab you from where you’re staying, between 4:30 am and 5:00 am. Gotta get moving, right? Then it’s about a 2-hour drive to Mollepata (first mention, Mollepata, altitude not needed since Challacancha is starting point), where we’ll stop for breakfast. Fuel up, you know? After that, we keep going to Challacancha (3800 m / 12457 ft). This is where the hiking actually starts. We’ll be hiking for about 3 hours to Soraypampa base camp, sitting at 3,900 meters (12,800 ft.) above sea level. Lunch there, good and filling.

After lunch, we’re heading to the famous Humantay Lagoon (4,220 m / 13,850 ft). It’s about a 1.5-hour walk, and seriously, the views are incredible. Landscapes are wild, colors everywhere, depends on when you go, of course. Green valleys, mountains – Humantay and Salkantay Andes Mountains are right there.

Our local guide will tell you the story, history stuff, interesting bits. And yeah, you get time to wander around and check it out yourself. Afterwards, we head back down to Soraypampa base camp. Hot coca tea waiting for you, then dinner cooked up by our crew.

Alright, 5:00 am again, breakfast time. Need energy for today, big hike coming. Starting from Soraypampa, we’re going up, up, up for about 3 hours to the highest point, Abra Salkantay. Views from there? Breathtaking.

Snowy Andes Mountains all around – Salkantay (first mention, altitude not needed since Salkantay Pass is next location), Humantay, Tucarhuay, and Pumasillo (4,650 meters / 15,250 feet). We’ll pass through Salkantaypampa (first mention, altitude not needed since Salkantay Pass was higher) and Soyrococha, and find a pretty little lake. Then, start going downhill towards Wacracmachay (3,800 meters / 12,470 feet) – that’s about 3 hours down.

Lunch there. And we’re still going down for another 3 hours until we reach our campsite in Collpapampa (first mention, altitude not needed since Wacracmachay was in descent). Tea and dinner waiting for us, cooked by our cook. Tonight, we’re sleeping in comfy domes at the campsite.

  • Hiking Distance: 22 km / 13.47 miles

Good night’s sleep? Hope so. Day 3 starts with breakfast, naturally. Then, we kick off our 5 ½ hour hike through the Peruvian jungle. Lots of ups and downs on this one. We’re in the cloud forest part now, seeing coffee plants, orchids, all sorts of natural medicinal plants. We get to our lunch spot to chill for a bit, and do a coffee tour. Yeah, coffee tour in the jungle.

Night time, we’re in private jungle domes. You can go check out the thermal baths in Cocalmayo, Santa Teresa (not included in the price, just so you know). Back to camp by 6:00 pm for tea and dinner, freshly cooked.

  • Hiking Distance: 14 km / 8.7 miles

Morning views today are something else. Rivers, waterfalls, orchids, plantations – bananas, avocados, coffee, you name it. Breakfast, then get ready for more trekking. Today, we’re hiking a section of the original Inca Trail! We go up along the Inca Trail, great views of the Santa Teresa Valley. After about 2.5 hours uphill, we get to the Inca archaeological site of Llactapata (first mention, altitude not needed since Santa Teresa Valley is a broad area).

Guide will tell you about the history of this place. And here’s a bonus – first proper view of Machu Picchu Mountain (first mention, altitude not needed since Llactapata is viewpoint) and Huayna Picchu Mountain (first mention, altitude not needed since Llactapata is viewpoint).

Downhill for lunch, then hike to Hidroelectrica (first mention, altitude not needed since Llactapata is viewpoint). From there, you can walk to Aguas Calientes (first mention, altitude not needed since Hidroelectrica is transit point) – about 3 hours walk – or hop on a train for an extra $38.00. Once we’re in Aguas Calientes, dinner at a local place in town, you know, at the foot of Machu Picchu. Hotel tonight.

  • Hiking Distance: 18 km / 11 miles

This is it, the big day. Machu Picchu day. One of the New Seven Wonders, remember?

Super early start, around 4:30 a.m., packed breakfast ready to go.

Then we hike up to Machu Picchu, takes about 1.5 hours. Down for 30 minutes to Puente Ruinas checkpoint (first mention, altitude not needed since Aguas Calientes is base), show your passport, Machu Picchu tickets, student ID if you got one. Cross Puente Ruinas, then stairs up for about an hour to Machu Picchu’s main gate. Aiming to be there by 6:00 a.m.

Hotel will keep your big bags while you’re at Machu Picchu. Just a small backpack with essentials, big bags not allowed inside. Bus option from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu too, about 30 minutes, costs $12 USD.

Inside Machu Picchu, your guide takes you straight to the best spot for that classic photo. Then, a 2.5-hour tour through the main parts of the citadel. History, culture, all that stuff. Andean paradise, they call it.

After the tour, explore Machu Picchu on your own. Wanna hike Huayna Picchu Mountain (2 hours) or Machu Picchu Mountain (3 hours)? Book ahead, they sell out quick, and cost $60 each. Guide will show you where to start if you’re doing that. How long you stay at Machu Picchu depends on how you’re getting back to Cusco – train or car.
