Overview

Overview

The Salkantay Trek 4 Days  it’s like the 5-day Salkantay Trek but quicker, you know, faster pace.

You still get to check out all the main things. Think snow mountains, those really blue lakes like Humantay Lagoon and Salkantay Lake, and going through cloud forest and real Peruvian jungle. People reckon it’s one of the best and most interesting treks in Peru, for sure.

Itinerary

DAY 1:

CUSCO – MOLLEPATA – SORAYPAMPA – HUMANTAY LAKE

Day one of the Salkantay Trek, the 4-day one, we’re picking you up early, between 4:30 am and 5:00 am. Gotta get going early, yeah? It’s about a 2-hour drive to Mollepata (first mention, Mollepata, altitude not required since Challacancha is start point). We stop there for breakfast, get some food in you.

Then we carry on driving to Challacancha (3800 m / 12457 ft). This is where we start hiking, Challacancha. We’ll hike for roughly 3 hours to Soraypampa base camp, it’s at 3,900 meters (12,800 ft.) above sea level. Lunch there, something good to eat.

After lunch, we go towards the famous Humantay Lagoon (4,220 m / 13,850 ft). About a 1.5-hour walk, and honestly, the views are something else. Landscapes are, like, full-on, lots of colors, depending on the time of year, mind.

You’ll see green valleys, loads of plants, and mad views of the Humantay and Salkantay Andes mountains. Local guide will tell you bits about the history and interesting stuff. Plus, you get time to have a look around yourself, check the place out. Then we walk back down to Soraypampa base camp. Hot coca tea when you get back, then dinner cooked up by the cooks.

Right, 5:00 am, breakfast again. Need plenty of energy for today’s hike. Starting from Soraypampa, we’re hiking uphill for 3 hours to the highest point, Abra Salkantay. Views up there are amazing, proper views of the snow-covered high Andes Mountains, including Salkantay (first mention, altitude not needed since Salkantay Pass is next location), Humantay, Tucarhuay, and Pumasillo (4,650 meters / 15,250 feet).

We go past Salkantaypampa (first mention, altitude not needed since Salkantay Pass was higher) and Soyrococha, and spot a nice little lake. Then we start going down towards Wacracmachay (3,800 meters / 12,470 feet).

That downhill is about 3 hours. Lunch at Wacracmachay. Still going downhill for another 3 hours until we get to our campsite in Collpapampa (first mention, altitude not needed since Wacracmachay was descent point). Tea and dinner waiting, cooked by the cook. Tonight, sleep in comfy domes at the campsite.

  • Hiking Distance: 22 km / 13.47 miles

After a good night’s sleep and a decent breakfast, day 3 of the Salkantay trek to Machu Picchu kicks off with breakfast again, yeah. We start a 5-and-a-half-hour hike through the Peruvian jungle, lots of up and down bits. This part of the trek, we’re in cloud forest, you’ll see coffee plants, banana and avocado trees, orchids, and loads of natural plants used for medicine.

We get to lunch spot to have a break, then after lunch, we get transport to Hidroelectrica (first mention, altitude not needed since Lucmabamba was last camp). From Hidroelectrica, we walk for roughly 3 hours to get to Aguas Calientes (first mention, altitude not needed since Hidroelectrica is transit point). When we get to Aguas Calientes, dinner at a local place in town, at the bottom of Machu Picchu, you know. Hotel in Aguas Calientes for the night.

  • Hiking Distance: 16 km/10 miles. After lunch: 11 km/7 miles.

We’re up early to visit Machu Picchu. Lost City of the Incas, found again in 1911 by Hiram Bingham, apparently. We’ll do a guided tour, have a look at the neighborhoods, plazas, terraces, and where they watched the stars, astronomical observatories. After the tour, you’ve got free time to take photos, wander around yourself, explore the site.

If you’re up for climbing Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, you do that at set times, either 6 to 8 am or 9 to 11 am, depending on your ticket.

Afternoon time, we go back to Aguas Calientes for lunch (lunch not included in the price, remember). Then get the train back to Ollantaytambo (first mention, altitude not needed since Aguas Calientes is base). On the train, you see views of the Sacred Valley. When we get to Ollantaytambo, transport will drop you off at San Francisco Square in Cusco.
