With just 6 days, you get to see two top tourist spots, kind of mixing culture and nature together. For culture part, you get into local stuff, find out about Inca history. You’ll go to two well-known Inca places, Pisaq Archaeological Site and Ollantaytambo Inca Fortress, both pretty impressive in their own way.
These places used to be Inca towns, with religious spots, farming areas built into hillsides, houses, storage buildings, water systems, all sorts of things. Looking around these places, you’ll learn about Inca history, which is good to know before you do the Salkantay Trek. Plus, both Inca sites show different Inca building styles. Like, Ollantaytambo’s got the second biggest rocks from Inca times, brought from about 5 kilometers away. It’s really something how they moved these huge rocks to build their temples.
While you’re travelling in the Sacred Valley, you’ll also stop at a local village. There, you can learn about farming and local ways of life. After a full day seeing the Sacred Valley, you go straight to the start of the Salkantay Trail. You’ll sleep there in glass cabins. You’ll be ready to start hiking early next morning, wanting to get to the Blue Lagoon around 6:30 am. You can see the sunrise over the mountains there, and it won’t be crowded, as most people get there later from Cusco. These glass cabins are right at the base of Humantay Glacier peak, about 1.5 hours from the Blue Lagoon. After that, you keep going on the Salkantay Trek towards Machu Picchu.

We also can see the farming areas where they grow different vegetables. After that, we continue to Pisac Inca site (first mention, altitude not needed yet as next location is higher and more precise location). You can enjoy how beautiful the site is and the area around it. Lunch break at a local place in Lamay. After lunch, we drive along the Sacred Valley to get to the still-living Inca city of Ollantaytambo (2792m / 9160ft), here is first altitude mention. We’ll visit the famous Inca site and see how important Ollantaytambo was in Inca times and now. When the tour is finished, the guide takes you to the hotel for the night.
AFTERNOON: Transfer to the GLASS CABANAS NO HIKING TODAY Accommodations: Glass Cabanas at Soraypampa (3900m / 12795ft), first altitude mention for Soraypampa, a bit higher for sleeping location. Elevation: 3800 meters above sea level Weather: Cold, windy, rainy in the wet season
DAY 2:
SORAYPAMPA CAMPSITE – HUMANTAY LAGOON – SALKANTAY PASS - WAYRACMACHAYAfter a good night’s sleep, wake up early for breakfast before the trek. In the morning, there will be a quick introduction of the team to all the trekkers. After the introduction, you give your duffel bag to the mule team, they carry it to the next campsite. The day’s hike starts with a 1.5 hour walk uphill to the well-known Humantay Lagoon (4,220 m / 13,845 ft), altitude mentioned again, but first time for Humantay Lagoon as a location on itinerary. The calm views of the blue water of Humantay Lagoon are really something. If the sky is clear, you’ll see the first sunlight on the snow peaks.
And also, if you want, you can touch the almost-frozen water that locals believe can make you stay young forever! Good thing about visiting Humantay Lagoon early is it’s quiet, not many other people except your group. Because it’s a popular place, not everyone gets to enjoy this quiet time. After taking it all in, you start walking back to the start to continue to the lunch spot in Soyroccocha (first mention, altitude not needed yet as higher point is next).
This part of the hike is about 3 hours on ground that goes up little by little. On the way, you’ll pass amazing places like Salkantay Pampa (first mention, altitude not needed yet as higher point is next). Salkantay Pampa means great views of the mountains with snow around. These views make the trip worth it. Lunch made by the local cook, then rest for a bit. Afterwards, you continue the next part of the hike. This next part goes on for about 1 hour until you get to Salkantay Pass (4,650 meters / 15,250 feet), first altitude mention for Salkantay Pass.
This is the highest point of the whole trek. The group will rest there, and you’ll get hot drinks while you look at the views. From Salkantay Pass, you are on the last part of the hike for today, a 3-hour walk downhill to the campsite for the night, Wayracmachay (3,800 meters / 12,467 feet), first altitude mention for Wayracmachay. When you get to the campsite, the trekking team will have your tents set up and your duffel bags ready.
The team will give you warm water to wash up after the day so you can change into warmer clothes for night time. Then there is a happy hour with hot chocolate and coffee, then dinner. If the weather is good, you can see the sky with no lights around and get a short talk about the Inca stars you can see.
DAY 3:
WAYRACMACHAY – CHAULLAY – CCOLLPAPAMPA LORETA (HOBBIT HOUSE)The trekking team will wake you up early with a hot drink to get you going. Hopefully, when you open your tent, you see the sunrise over big glacier mountains and clouds going up from the green cloud forest. You have time to pack and eat breakfast made by the local cook.
Around 7 a.m., you hike for about 4 hours downhill until you reach the lunch spot at Ccollpapampa (2,700 meters / 8,858 feet), altitude mentioned again, first time for Ccollpapampa as specific camp location. During this hike, you’ll start seeing changes in the weather and plants and animals. You go from cold glacier views to warm green jungle area.
Lots of different orchids to see, and ferns, begonia flowers and even hummingbirds. After lunch and rest, you keep trekking to the next private campsite called La Loreta (2400 meters / 7874 feet), altitude mentioned again, first time for La Loreta as specific camp location. This hike is about 4 hours going downhill slowly. On the way, you can see nice waterfalls, rivers, and more new plants and animals. You get to see another kind of tropical forest weather where local people grow coffee, passion fruit, papayas, oranges and avocados.
When you get to the campsite for tonight, the trekking team will be there to welcome you. You have time for a hot shower, hot tub, and maybe even swim in the pool. Also, time to walk around the garden to see coffee, avocado, chilies, tomatoes, and pineapples growing. Dinner tonight will be in a building with views of the Salkantay River. When you go to sleep, you can hear the Salkantay River.
DAY 4:
LORETA – LA PLAYA SAHUAYAKU – LUCMABAMBA COFFEE FARM – LLACTAPATA (Camp in front of Machu Picchu)After breakfast cooked by the local chef, you start the shortest day but most exciting day of the trip. Today you’ll see the best sights on the way to Machu Picchu. You’ll explore the tropical forest and visit a local organic coffee farm. There, you can see orange and avocado trees and taste fresh coffee.
At the coffee farm, you get a short talk about coffee history in the area and why it is important there. Then you keep trekking to Llactapata (2,700 meters / 8,858 feet), altitude mentioned again, first time for Llactapata as camp location. You hike part of the Inca trail for about 2.5 hours to get there.
On the way to Llactapata Inca site, you see great views of the Santa Teresa valley (first mention, altitude not needed, broad valley location). The views today are really amazing, hard to describe.
At Llactapata, you get your first view of Machu Picchu. This includes the main sites of Machu Picchu Mountain and Huayna Picchu Mountain (first mentions, altitude not needed, seen from viewpoint). You also can explore the Llactapata Inca site and take photos. From here, you walk downhill for 15 minutes to your lunch and campsite area.
The campsite is in front of Machu Picchu, so you get more privacy than other trekkers. The campsite is a good place to see the sunset and sunrise over Machu Picchu. After lunch, free time to enjoy views and relax from hiking.
Before dinner from the local cook, you have happy hour with tea and coffee again. After sunset, get ready to see stars again. You’ll see the Milky Way and Inca stars same way Inca astronomers did to guess the weather.
Walking Distance: 12 km Campsite Elevation: 2,700 meters Elevation Gained: 400 meters Weather: Hot and humid during the day, chilly at night
DAY 5:
LLACTAPATA LOOKOUT – WATERFALLS AT HIDROELECTRICA – MANDOR HIRAM BINGHAM FARM – AGUAS CALIENTESThe trekking team wakes you up early again (5:30-6am) with hot drink to start the day. Get ready for the day’s activities and eat breakfast made by the local cook, last breakfast from him. Today’s hike starts with a 2-hour downhill walk with great views of Machu Picchu until Hidroelectrical Station (first mention, altitude not needed, transit point). This station was built to use a natural 300-meter high waterfall to make electricity for the Cusco area.
This waterfall is a main sight in this area. Lunch here, last lunch made by the local cook, and say goodbye to him. From Hidroelectrical Station, continue to the famous Intiwatana (sundial rock) (first mention, altitude not needed, location near Hidroelectrica). History says this Inca stone worked with the sundial rock in Machu Picchu to signal winter solstice, meaning start of new farming season for Incas. After seeing Intiwatana, you continue on the path next to the train tracks for about 3 hours. This goes to Aguas Calientes (first mention, altitude not needed, town at base of Machu Picchu).
This part of hike is interesting as it was the trail used by American professor Hiram Bingham when he found Machu Picchu again. On way to find Machu Picchu, Hiram Bingham met local farmer Melchor Arteag who then guided him to Machu Picchu. On your trek, you walk past Melchor Artaeg’s farm, Mandor Hiram Bingham Farm (first mention, altitude not needed, location on route).
Here you see plants and animals and local birds like Peru’s national bird (cock of the rock), Toucans, Oropendolas, and Parrots. When you get to Aguas Calientes, go to hotel for hot shower and maybe visit the hot springs (10 soles, not included) in Aguas Calientes. Dinner at restaurant by 7pm. Walking distance not specified for this day in original text, keeping it unspecified here.
DAY 6:
MACHU PICCHU – RETURN TO CUSCOToday is all about Machu Picchu. To get most from the day, we tell everyone to have breakfast early then take one of first buses up to Machu Picchu (starting at 5:30 a.m.). This lets you get there before it gets too crowded. The hotel holds your bags while you are in Machu Picchu. So, you only need to take a small backpack with important things to Machu Picchu. Bus ride from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu is about 30 minutes. Once in Machu Picchu (2430m / 7972ft), altitude first mention for Machu Picchu itself as final destination. your guide takes you straight to best place to see sunrise and take photos.
Then your local guide shows you around main parts of the place for 2.5 hours. During this tour, you learn more about Inca history and culture. After tour, you have some free time to relax and look around on your own. Unless you planned to hike Huayna Picchu (book early, sells out, costs $75 per person), your guide shows you where to start this hike if you have ticket.
This hike is about 2 hours round trip. To return from Machu Picchu, we say to go back to Aguas Calientes by 2 hours before your train leaves. Train ride back from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo is about 2 hours. In Ollantaytambo, our staff is waiting for you at the station exit. They will take you back to Cusco by car. Car ride to Cusco is about 2 hours and they drop you off at your hotel in Cusco. Machu Picchu Mountain can be hiked instead of Huayna Picchu Mountain. This hike is harder and takes at least three hours round trip (extra cost of USD $75 per person).
